Choosing Lenses For Sailing

When people think of Australia, they picture it in bright, bold colours.  But it also has its muted tones.  Depending on the time of day, time of year and where you are on this vast continent, you’ll encounter the full kaleidoscope of colour tones.

That’s why we’ve developed a variety of options for sailing sunglasses.

SMOKE (GREY) LENSES – TYPHOON, SURGE AND FLO

If you prefer seeing the world in natural colours through the lens of your sunglasses, then our smoke (grey) lenses are your best option.  Our Typhoon sunnies have a smoke (grey) nylon lens while our Surge and FLO models have polycarbonate smoke (grey) lenses which give a neutral tone. Both are category 3 polarised lenses.

We also have a ‘methane smoke’ lens option for our Typhoon sailing sunglasses which have a visible light transmission rate (VLT) of 11.1%. These lenses are made by leading optical experts ZEISS, and are designed for bright and sunny environments – like Australia!

For our FLO and Surge models, the VLT is 10% and 12% respectively which means they can also handle strong sunlight and significant glare. However, you may find that they are a little on the dark side when conditions are cloudy and the sun settles towards the horizon.

Both models have advanced hydrophobic coatings to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating as well as a hard coating on both sides of the lenses.

ROSE/ICE BLUE  – POLARISED (SURGE AND FLO)

Going sailing with rose coloured spectacles?

Jokes aside, the pink/rose base colour of our Ice-Blue polycarbonate lenses for our Surge and FLO sailing sunglasses enables greater contrast and enhanced colour perception over the brown lenses.

This is due to our VIVIDE lens technology which controls light transmission into the eye.  Blue light is filtered out and the red and green light is enhanced, which can give you an edge when you’re out on the water facing a sea of bright blue.

Our Ice Blue lenses have a VLT of 8.35% which is on the lower end of a category 3 lens.  This means the lens is more suited to very bright, sunny conditions and is the darkest shade of all our lenses.  As with our brown lenses however, these perform well in cloudier conditions because of the increased contrast from the pink/rose base colour.

As with all our sunglasses, the VIVIDE Ice Blue lenses have an advanced hydrophobic coating which repels water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on either side of the lenses.

You’ve seen the myriad shades of blue that make up the oceans around Australia.  There’s turquoise, aquamarine, cobalt, navy, sky blue ..the list is endless, so if you want to bring the hues of blue and bright visible light back into balance, these category 3 polarised lenses are ideal.

VIOLET/PACIFIC BLUE – POLARISED (TYPHOON AND FLO)

As with the Ice Blue lenses detailed above, the violet base colour of the Pacific Blue lenses provide enhanced contrast and vivid colour perception when you’re out on the water.  These lenses are made from polyamide (nylon) which gives super crisp vision with an Abbe value of 52.

The Violet/Pacific Blue lenses are available in both our Typhoon and FLO models and are made by ZEISS.

If you’re sailing in the big blue of any of the seven oceans and seas surrounding Australia and conditions are bright and sunny, the category 3 polarised Pacific Blue lenses could be right for you.  This is because these lenses subdue the amount of blue light entering the eye and they enhance the reds and greens.  The blue mirror coating also reflects blue light.

The VLT for these lenses is 9.95% (the lower end of a category 3 lens) which means they are perfectly suited to bright and sunny conditions.

As with all our sunglasses, the Pacific Blue lenses come with ZEISS’s advanced hydrophobic coating which repels water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on either side of the lenses.

BROWN BASE COLOUR LENSES (SURGE AND TYPHOON)

The brown base colour lenses for the Surge and Typhoon model have a red/brown hue which brings out the richness of all colours, but which gives a particular ‘pop’ to reds and greens.  This increases the contrast between the different colours which is enhanced by the category 3 polarised lenses in both models.

Our methane brown lenses of our Typhoon sunglasses are now being made from nylon, which is a significant upgrade from their previous incarnation in polycarbonate.  These lenses made by ZEISS have a VLT of 15.6%, whereas the VLT for our Surge and FLO models is 10%.

While brown lenses are a versatile option for all types of weather and light conditions (including the bright sunshine of an Aussie summer day), there is a noticeable increase in contrast and detail when they’re worn in cloudy or darker conditions.

Both our brown and smoke lenses have an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on either side of the lenses.

BROWN/ROSE GOLD MIRROR – POLARISED (TYPHOON)

This lens option is only available in our Typhoon range.

The brown base lens colour of the ZEISS Rose Gold nylon lenses provides great colour contrast.  The lenses also feature a rose gold mirror coating.

These lenses still fit into the category 3 range of polarisation with their VLT rating of 14.2%, but rank slightly higher than most of our other polarised sailing sunglasses lenses which have a VLT range between 8-12%.  This means that these brown lenses are more suited to lower light conditions and cloudier days than super-bright and sunny conditions.

These lenses come with ZEISS’s advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an efficient anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on either side of the lenses.

BROWN / MULTILAYER GREEN – POLARISED (SURGE AND FLO)

These polycarbonate Levanté Series lenses are available in both the FLO and Surge models.

The lenses have a brown base colour and a multilayer green mirror coating which offers great contrast and which makes colours really ‘pop’.  And as with most multilayer mirror coatings, the mirror colour blends from a deep blue to a rich dark green depending on the angle of view.  Now you can truly see (and be seen) in technicolour!

The VLT rate is 11.5% so these lenses have an all-round tint which is a bit like Baby Bear’s porridge.  Not too bright – not too dark – just right.

These lenses from LiP Sunglasses Australia come equipped with an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on both sides of the lenses.

SMOKE / MULTILAYER BLUE -POLARISED (SURGE AND FLO)

If you’re a beginner learning to navigate a craft, these polycarbonate Levanté Series lenses by LiP Sunglasses are ideal.  The reason for that is that they’re perfect for someone who is going to spend a considerable amount of time IN the water as well as on top of it!

They have a grey base colour with a neutral tone and VLT rate of 12.5% – which is a good all-round tint for bright and sunny conditions in Australia.

The lenses also have a multilayer blue mirror coating as well as an anti-fog coating on the inner lens surface.  And that’s why they’re perfect for beginners.  The anti-fog coating is designed to defog lenses that mist up due to body heat and moist breath being exhaled – giving you a clear view of what’s going on around you both on the boat and in the water!

The Smoke/Multilayer Blue lenses are available in both the FLO and Surge models.

The lenses also come equipped with an advanced hydrophobic coating, anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on the front surface and anti-fog and hard coating on the inner surface.

SMOKE / MULTILAYER RED – POLARISED (SURGE)

These are available in the Surge model only.

The grey base colour of these polycarbonate Levanté Series lenses has a neutral tone and a VLT rate of 17.4%.  This is ideal for cloudy or variable lighting conditions.   The injected polarisation layer also cuts out 99% of reflected glare.

The lenses also have a multilayer red mirror coating which blends from deep red to fiery orange depending on the angle which the lenses are viewed.

These lenses feature an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on both sides of the lenses.

COPPER-SMOKE / SILVER – POLARISED (SURGE AND FLO)

These polycarbonate VIVIDE Series lenses are available in both the FLO and Surge models.

They feature a blended copper-grey base colour which enhances reds and greens and a uniform silver mirror coating.  This uniform flash mirror coating cuts out some of the glare, which is good news for sailors out on the sparkling waters off Australia under bright cloudless skies.

With a VLT rate of 10%, these lenses are at the darker end of category 3 but it is important to note that they aren’t polarised.  This means that reflected glare is not significantly filtered out, so you may want to explore some of our other polarised sailing sunglasses if removing glare is a priority.

These lenses come equipped with an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating on both sides of the lenses.

MULTILAYER RED LENSES – NON-POLARISED (FLO)

These ZEISS multilayer red lenses are available only in the FLO model.

They are category 2 polycarbonate lenses with a VLT rate of 26% and are best suited to medium/low light conditions.

The base colour of the ZEISS lens is smoke (grey), which is a true tone lens with a progressive red multilayer coating with red/yellow hues.

The lenses are not polarised, so they are not suitable for handling significant glare. However, these sailing sunglasses are good for cloudy days, times when there is intermittent sunshine or dawn/dusk sailing sessions when glare is not a concern.

As with all our Lip Sunglasses, these lenses come equipped with an advanced hydrophobic coating to repel water, an anti-smudge oleophobic coating and a hard coating.
